Mulvey's THEORY

Laura Mulvey's Theory

Laura Mulveys theory consists of music videos objectifying women. Her theory includes something known as 'the male gaze' which is viewing the music video/characters from a male perspective. She believes that 'the male gaze' has now become normal for everyone to view and gives a disadvantage to womens representation within society. This gives the impression that the only thing a women has to offer is her body and should be the property of men.

The Male Gaze
In terms of camera angles generally they will focus on a womens curves, such as breasts, hips and bum, because of this it means a female viewer must watch the video from a mans perspective so therefore they are able to identify with males when watching the videos. This can eventually lead to women judging other women on style/appearance.

-In all forms of media Mulvey believes women are overly sexualised, she expresses her idea that the viewers do not focus on the women in the videos as a whole, but rather their individual body parts.

Jason Derulo- Talk Dirty To Me

Although thier are other videos such as dizzie rascal-Holiday which is an obvious example of mulveys theory, i think this video also portrays this message. Just like Mulvey explained particular camera shots are shown of womens body parts. Some disturbing lines included are 'your booty dont need explaining' and the obvious 'Talk dirty to me'. Throughout the video their we are able to hear a trumpet, this is more visible when the camera cuts to a women blowing a 'trumpet' numerous amounts of times, this quite frankly foreshadows a women 'blowing' a 'trumpet'.

Katy Perry-California Gurls
Although this video also depicts mulveys theory, a women now takes the lead role. However it seems as if nothing has changed, their are still many camera shots of her breasts and angles which sexualise the female body. A line includes 'Daisy dukes bikinis on top, sun kissed skin so hot were unforgettable'
clearly singing about womens breasts and how 'unforgettable' women are.
Snop dogg also makes an appearence in a suite covered in sweets, this depicts that he is a 'sugar daddy'.
However Mulveys theory can be challenged by this video

Missy Elliot-The Rain

Every outfit that Elliot has been pictured in consists of her in jumpers and trousers with long pimp like jackets. It seems as if she has tried to reverse the roles as she is then captured in the middle of 5/6 muscular men dancing around her. One basetrack also consists of her wearing a fat suit which is black latex which is the opposite of 'sexy', however many argue this may be due to the fact that she is slightly overweight and if she wasn't she may be behaving differently.
