Production of Ancillary - Final Images for Ancillary

Final images for ancillary

These are the final images I have decided to use for my ancillary work. I have edited them with the bokeh lights effects; as you can see, they are my synergy.

Production of Ancillary - Using Photoshop

Using Photoshop

I have been using Photoshop for the making of my ancillary work. This has allowed me to fade different images together in a way that they all fit in perfectly with each other. Also, I was able to edit the photographs of Molly so that the lighting, tone and contrast are all well done. In addition, I am able to blur the bokeh lights, which is the main aspect of my ancillary work. These are just some screenshots that I took during the starting process. I will keep you posted….

Editing

Here are screenshots as to how i edited mollys eyes within photoshop. Although they didnt particularly need changing i thought i would experiment in terms of the different tools available within photoshop.

These are also screen shots i used when experimenting with her skin and certain filters.

Photoshop FAILS

I've have loads of ideas for the inside panel of the digipak and I've spent this lesson trying to clone Molly, which has been pretty hard because I don't have a picture solely of the background we used. I tried different techniques that I searched up on Google but it didn't work. I wanted to use the full length pictures we have of Molly but it has been really difficult.

I found a picture of the background and got three pictures of Molly just to see how cheesy it looks... and this has slightly put my off the idea... I tried to get the opacity down and change the colour and lighting of the background. I also tired to make sure that Molly didn't look stretched out or make the image look distorted in any way but... I'm not too sure I'll keep this for the digipak.

Advert Planning

Here is the advert that I made in the lesson today (don't judge the drawing, I don't do art). I had some reviews below the album cover and then the tour dates beside them and then Rebecca told me it has to be one or the other so I got rid of the magazine reviews and put down social network icons there instead. As far as the colours I'll use for the advert background, I'm not sure what I'll use as of yet, but I'll be using the same font as the album cover and the same font colour.

Mock up Advertisement :)

This is me planning for my advertisement, in terms of layout and font!

Ancillary Planning

We took some photos in the photography studio, and we got some light photos from google, printed them on acetate and projected them onto the wall behind Molly. I liked this photo the most and wanted to use this as it was the closest to my album cover plan.

I changed the levels on the photo to make the lights stand out more and I tried out a font which I had an idea about. I like the way the picture looks and I think it makes the picture stronger but I'm not sure about the font and I want to try out more and maybe get a better picture of her. Also I want to put the album title 'Lights' in the bottom right of the picture. I'm still thinking... This is so complicated :( I'll keep you posted

Planning Ancillary - Overview of Costume

Overview of Costume

I have decided to keep the costume similar to the one that was used in the music video; smart casual. I chose this for my ancillary work swell because I think that it fits the genre of music and it also reflects the image of the artist. Molly will probably wear a shirt, perhaps a purple shirt in relation to the purple bokeh lights that me and my group have decided to have as synergy.

Ancillary Planning- Fonts

Above is a potential list of fonts which i may use. When choosing my font i have to think rather carefully as to what i will chose. This is because i have to take into consideration my genre, colour scheme and layout. I have to make sure it is easy to read but doesn't detract from the overall image i will use

Ancillary Planning- Costume

In terms of costume, i asked Molly to wear a purple shaded top as i believe this will contribute and blend in with the background of my digipak which is purple bokeh lights. I did this as i believe it will contribute to the synergy immensely and add to the visual links which will be made between all my products.

Planning Ancillary - Photos I Plan to Use

Photos I plan to use

As you can see, I took some shots of Molly in the studio because I really wanted to stick with the idea of making the cover a clear introduction to a new artist. What better way to do this than with a clear photograph of the artist herself. I took the shots from different angles because I might use some of the shots, like the eyes, for the CD itself. There are also some shots where I used the projector to project a printout of purple bokeh lights. The image was projected on molly. Here is my shortlist of photographs:

Planning Ancillary - Fonts, Layout and Design

Fonts, layout and design

There is a large variety of fonts to choose for my ancillary work. The font that I will use will be most likely to be 'cambria' because I plan to make the text slightly glow, so I will need space between each word for the glow to be seen. Also, I have to keep in mind that I might have to use more than one font; for example, the font for the artist's name could be different from the album's name one. I am not 100% sure yet which one is going to be my final one but I am sure in the process I will find out which one suits best.

On the other hand, for the layout, I want to have Molly in the middle of the face, so the audience can get a good idea of who she is. Furthermore, I plan to have the next in the middle whenever I plan to use it because it will look more clearer and it will suit the photograph hopefully. The barcode and other type of logo or information will be positioned at the bottom of the cover, ads well as in the poster.

Bokeh lights is the main aspect me and my group have decided to use for our synergy. This means that the design will be mainly based on faded bokeh lights.

Cinema Screening!

Cinema Screening

To celebrate the finished music video, the whole of media went to the cinema in angel to watch everyone else's music video. It was fun to celebrate with other and it was also a great chance for us to get some feedback on our final music video.

Cinema Screening :)

Today we visited Screen On The Green and got to watch our own and fellow candi students music videos. It was really exciting as we had all spent hours editing and filming avery piece of footage and it was finally complete. Although it was slightly nerve-racking having to see our finished result on the big screen, the rest of the students were really supportive as we were with all their work.
-Im really impressed as to how ours turned out, and while ours was on although i find it hard to watch i couldn't comprehend how Molly must have felt as she was featured init! But she did amazingly and looked beautiful.

Everyones work was fantastic and it was amazing to be apart of something where everyone is so supportive regardless.

Cinema Screening

Today we went to the Screen on the Green on Upper Street where the whole of the A2 Media Students watched their videos. I was anxious to see ours, but was interested and excited to see my fellow students work!

It was daunting seeing myself on a massive cinema screen but I was proud to witness what my group and I have achieved, as well as my peers! I felt some of the videos I saw were visually appealing and used camera work and editing to their advantage. Well Done Everyone!

Cinema Screening!

We went to the screening of everyone's music video and I'm so happy with the way ours turned out! It was so weird seeing our names up on the big screen and seeing all of our hard work but I really enjoyed it and everybody's reactions were amazing. We got some feedback from other students and we will shortly be uploading those soon.

Photos for Digipak

Photos for Digipak

We just used the Photography studio to take our photos for our Digipaks. In order to maintain our theme of synergy (Bokeh Lights) we printed some purple lights on to acetate and then projected onto a white wall. However, it seemed to be quite faint so we will possibly photoshop the lights on.

This if the effect that using the acetate uses. It creates the bokeh light background that I want on my Digipak and Poster. The colours also match the short that I was wearing as costume which is quite effective. This way of incorporating synergy is quite effective as it mirrors our use of opactity editing within our video, layering one image and the other ,merging them together. This follows our chosen theorist Andrew Goodwin's idea of amplification and illustrating our concept of the artist enjoying the night life of the city, surrounded by lights.

Planning Ancillary - Mock Ups (Digipak and Advertisement)

Mock ups

In order to plan and to start thinking on how my ancillary material is going to look like, I decided to create physical mock ups, drawing what I think will look like my ancillary work. As you can see in the following photographs, for the cover I plan to have a photo of the artist (Molly) because it is a good form of introducing a brand new artist. Also, I plan to edit this image and have the bokeh lights, which are our synergy aspect, faded in the background. The artist's and album's name is also in the front cover. The track list is shown at the back, as well as the barcode, label logo and copyright information. Also, you can see the mock up of the inside cover. 'Lights', which is the album name is clearly seen across the CD. Furthermore, another photograph of Molly will be on the inside to let the audience know who she is. This is just a mock up, I will be updating how the process of making my ancillary work is going.

I also did a mock up for my advertisement. I want my advertisement to be in A5 because it will make it easier and better to follow the conventions. I want the image of Molly to be placed on the right hand side and then the album information will be on the left. The album cover will be displayed as well as the artist and album information.

Digipak Design

Today we made very rough ideas of what our final digipak will look like. Here are my front and back panels. However, we haven't yet decided what colour palette we are going to use so I left the colours blank.

Here are my inside panels and hopefully, unless I change my mind, this is what the outcome will look like.

Design for my Digipak

Today we designed what we wanted on our Digipak, as a group we are still undecided about the colour scheme, although we have incorporated synergy into our album design.

Rough Design Of My DigiPack

Research Ancillary- Examining Previous students work

In this post I'm going to be looking at the ancillary work (digipak and advertisement) for Stephanie Jackson.

Firstly the digipak. Overall i think it is really good, the colour scheme is consistent. The layout is really effective as all photos fit the frame really well. Each image used looks really professional in terms of the way it has been taken, and the editing behind it. The font fits the look really well too and is the same used throughout. Although the artist name is bigger then the album name, (which is important when following conventions) the album name looks slightly too small in my opinion, however that may be because of the size of the overall image. I would say the same with the back panel, they should have made the font look slightly larger so it is easier to read.

The image used on the advertisement is also the same image used on the front cover of the digipak. This makes it exceptionally easy to recognise that these two products are linked. The font is also the same as the one they used on the digipak, and i think its really effective how they used a different background so its easier to read and stands out more. One thing i believe they could have included to make it look more realistic (not that already doesn't) is some reviews. This would have provided the audience with information on what they were going to purchase.

Last Years Digipak

Last year our group did 'Britney Spears - Hit Me Baby One More Time'  and this was my digipak for it.

We forgot about taking pictures when we were recording our video so we had to use screen grabs from the video (which wont be happening this time) and then I had to edit Sophie on to it. The CD circle is soo small and it doesn't even have a whole in the middle :')... I've learned so much, this is a proud moment.

Research Ancillery - Digipak Practice

Digipak Practice

After doing some research on digipaks and the way they look as well as its structure, I had a go at making my own with an image we were given by our teachers. Unfortunately, these images were in bad quality. However, I was able to make something out of it. As you can see, it is a photograph of a girl, who I named Melinda Smith as an artist. The cover shows the name of the artist in a big sized font and then the album name in a smaller font on another part of the cover. I crated three rectangles, each of different colour, and then played with the opacity. The face of the artist is never covered by the font, which is good because the artist's image should always be clear. The back shows the track list, each numbered and in white and the background is what I thought relates to the girl; a field. On the bottom corner you can see the barcode and the label logo, followed by the copyright information. Also, the spine shows the artist name and the label logo too. Personally as my first attempt, I think it is alright although it could be improved. Hopefully my ideas will be developed for my actual ancillary work and I will be successful.

Research Ancillary - Last Summer's Digipak

Last Summer's Digipak

This is the digipak I created last summer. It was for the 'Rizzle Kicks' album. It was my first attempt of making a digipak. I think the idea of having both black and white colours strengthens the brand image. Also the font and the image use fits with the title of the album 'Lets get down with the trumpets'. It follows some of the conventions of digipaks. Looking at it now, I think the main weakness is that the front cover does not have a photograph of the artist. However, like mentioned before, it was my first attempt…

Research Ancillary- Digipak from last summer

This is my Digipak i created last summer for our prelim music video. Its pretty obvious that it was an album for 'Britney Spears' and we covered the song 'baby one more time'. The whole process was really enjoyable, however although our group spent a lot of time planning for costumes we generally forgot vital things such as taking photos specifically for the Digipak. This meant we then had to screenshot stills from the actual footage and use them for our digipak which is NOT ideal. Although i used stills for my digipak i don't think its too bad, i think the positioning of the images is quite well done and the colours with the back panel really match. Although i now know you are not supposed to feature text over the persons face (which i did in my first attempt ^) i also don't think its too bad as i was playing Britney spears and the viewer can obviously identify this. Therefore the outside panel for my first attempt overall i don't think its too bad considering on the amount i messed up on during the actual filming, however there is plentyyyyyy of room for improvement which i hope to illustrate in my official digipak which i am currently working on.

You can definitely tell i spent a lot more time on the outside panel then the inside.Overall the inside of my digipak is absolutely awful which is partly because i hadn't finished but regardless i also didn't keep to the colours i used on the outside panel the same. When completing my official digipak i will take all these things into consideration and will have a lot more time to perfect them.

Previous Ancillary Work

Here are some examples of good work from previous students.

The person who created this advert for 'Nathan Miller - I Am Electropop' seems to have followed conventions very well. I like how his colour palette is very simple and definitely fits in with the electropop genre. The green, purple and white stand out very nicely against each other and against the black background. He has appropriate critics for the genre and also shows singles from the album. The use of the social networks also shows how modern the artist and genre are.

I think the album cover is very good and l think although he has used a heavy filter on the picture, the effect fits with the genre and makes the picture look better. However I don't the back part of the cover simply because of the colour he chose. I think if he kept the back black as well, there would have been better continuity and looked more professional.

I think the inside is the weakest out of the three and it looks like he ran out of time and couldn't finish it in time :(. The CD is designed well, as it has the same pattern as the back of the album cover, but it is too small for the case which doesn't really happen. The other side is really empty and there isn't much that he has put in there. The picture is quite cheesy and the pose and effect around it really doesn't work for the genre.

This digipak for 'Y.Shocker - Life Of My Memories' is very genre specific and works very well. The grey colour palette works very well with his grey clothes in his cover photo. The font also works very well and is good for the genre. However, the lines that are on the front make it look cluttered and a bit cheesy, and the CD has no design on it and is too small for the case.

The advert, like the digipak, is genre specific and has featuring artists that are in around the same genre as the artist. The lines still take away from how professional the advert looks, and the writing is quite basic and doesn't really tell us much.

Research Ancillary-Digipak Practice

In todays lesson we looked at various different examples of good and bad digipaks. We then got set a task to produce a practice digipak of our own but only with images that the teachers provided for us. We had to pick out of a number of images which were all ridiculously bad quality, and i picked the one featured below as i thought it would be easiest to work with. Rebecca taught us to not put texts over a persons face, especially when the album is going to be an introducing album for the artist, (in which mine will be).

Firstly i opened the image that i chose in photoshop and evened out her skin tone and edited it to a much warmer colour. I decided to use only about three main colours to keep it simple yet effective. In terms of the name 'Angelina Hart' i thought it was cliché but thought it fitted quite well, the name has a teenage ring to it similar to 'taylor swift'. Because the album is introducing a new artist i put her name as the biggest thing on the front panel so it would be pretty obvious to identify. The album name is slightly  smaller but still bold underneath. For the back panel i used a similar colour to the background image on the front panel, i added a pink rose to the corner to not leave it to plain and to add substance, i believe this does contribute to the cliché teenage look. The track listing and copyright is then also featured on the back along with barcode and record label.
-Unfortunately as i would be introducing a new artist its crucial to be able to see their face so the audience are able to identify them, however this clearly isn't featured in my own.But it wasn't my image and i will improve and take include everything I've learnt when creating my finished product.

Research into Digipaks

Today we looked at the formation of a Digipak and what it includes, it can either be made into two or three panels. It's sole purpose is to attract the attention of the artists fan base as it includes extra parts, i.e Olly Murs includes a booklet with pictures and song lyrics.

The Digipak for our music video will include aspects of our syndergy i.e Bokeh Lights. Moreover, I explored Disclosure's Debut Album and it's features.

I then experimented with Photoshop to make my own Digipak using a template and photos. I have followed the conventions of the Digipak: Colour Scheme (3 colours), the image of our artist, the barcode and also the track list.
